RTA Opens New Sheikh Zayed Road Bridge, Cutting Travel Time to Dubai Harbour to 3 Minutes

Dubai Harbour gains major infrastructure boost as new bridge improves connectivity and traffic flow across key corridors

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has inaugurated a new bridge in the Dubai Harbour area, marking a significant step in enhancing mobility, easing congestion, and strengthening access to one of the city’s most important waterfront destinations.

The new infrastructure link dramatically improves connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour, reducing travel time to the area from approximately 12 minutes to just 3 minutes.

Direct access from Sheikh Zayed Road

The bridge provides a direct entry route from Sheikh Zayed Road into Dubai Harbour, significantly improving traffic movement for motorists arriving from both Jebel Ali and Deira.

Designed with two lanes in each direction, the bridge can handle up to 6,000 vehicles per hour, helping distribute traffic more efficiently across surrounding road networks.

Key infrastructure specifications

  • Two lanes in each direction
  • Total capacity of up to 6,000 vehicles per hour
  • Total length of approximately 1,500 metres
  • Five integrated ramps connected to the wider road network
  • Direct link between Interchange 5 and Dubai Harbour Street

The bridge begins near Interchange 5 close to the American University in Dubai and extends toward Dubai Harbour, crossing several key intersections along the corridor.

Construction progress and scale

According to the Roads and Transport Authority, construction is now approximately 90 percent complete, with final works progressing at an accelerated pace.

The project involved:

  • More than 1,400 engineers and workers
  • Around 4.2 million work hours
  • Zero lost-time injuries recorded

Construction materials used include:

  • Over 45,000 cubic metres of concrete
  • Around 8,200 tonnes of steel
  • 254 piles and 66 bridge columns

Part of wider road network upgrades

The bridge forms part of a broader infrastructure improvement package that includes:

  • Surface enhancements along the corridor
  • Upgrades at key intersections connected to the route
  • Improved traffic distribution across adjacent roads

Additional traffic links, including routes from Dubai Harbour toward Al Naseem Street and intersections with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, are expected to open in the coming phase of the project.

Strengthening Dubai Harbour’s growth

Located between Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island, Dubai Harbour is a major waterfront destination featuring one of the largest yacht marinas in the region.

The area is also undergoing large-scale development, including a 1.5-kilometre expansion featuring 24 residential towers and approximately 7,500 apartments.

Supporting Dubai’s urban expansion

The Roads and Transport Authority stated that the project aligns with Dubai’s long-term strategy to build an integrated transport network that supports rapid urban growth, economic development, and tourism expansion.

Once fully operational, the new bridge is expected to ease congestion, enhance accessibility, and reinforce Dubai Harbour’s position as a key leisure and tourism hub in the emirate.
